Three Relationship Skills That Can Transform Your Marriage or Partnership

At Georgia Family Mediation, one of the most powerful skills I’ve carried with me from my work as a therapist into the mediation room is the ability to help couples communicate differently. Whether they’re on the brink of divorce or hoping to give their marriage one last shot, I’ve found that three core skills make the biggest difference: validation, listening, and curiosity. These skills are consistent—across couples, across conflict, across culture.

Validation is about more than saying “I get it.” It’s the practice of acknowledging someone’s emotional experience without trying to fix it or argue against it. In mediation, when one partner feels hurt or misunderstood, the ability of the other to pause and say, “I can see why that would be upsetting,” changes the temperature in the room. It creates emotional safety—a space where even the most difficult truths can be spoken without sparking another argument.

Listening is a skill we all think we have, but few of us practice well. In mediation, I often slow the conversation down and invite each partner to really hear—not just the words, but the emotions behind them. True listening means putting aside your response long enough to understand the other person’s point of view. When that happens, walls come down. People soften. It becomes less about winning and more about understanding.

Curiosity is what keeps couples from making assumptions. It’s the mindset that says, “Tell me more,” instead of “Here we go again.” In the middle of conflict, this shift in approach can be everything. I teach couples how to stay open to each other, even when it’s hard. When partners get curious instead of critical, we start to uncover the real issues—and the path forward becomes clearer.
